How it works

How the voice age test works

It takes about a minute. Read naturally, as if you were on the phone with someone you know.

  1. Step 1

    Read a short paragraph aloud

Press the mic and read for 10 to 30 seconds. A paragraph from a book or article works best, because it gives the AI a natural pace and intonation to listen to. You can also upload a recording of up to 5 MB.

  2. Step 2

Sign in and send your clip

Voice age estimates run on an AI model, so you need an account, and new accounts can try it once for free. The credit cost is on the button before you send, and a failed estimate is refunded automatically.

  3. Step 3

See your voice age and why

You get an age range, usually six to ten years wide, a sentence on the cues behind it, scores for clarity, energy, resonance and steadiness, and a few friendly tips. Read something different to see how much it moves.

Highlights

How old do I sound? What the AI listens for

Voices carry age cues the way faces do, but far less precisely. Here's what your estimate is built on.

A range, not a single number

Even experienced listeners miss people's ages by years, so the test gives you a range, such as 28 to 36, instead of pretending to know your exact age. A short reason line tells you which cues pushed the estimate younger or older.

Built on real vocal cues

The AI listens for things that genuinely shift with age: your pitch, how bright or dark your voice is, your pace, your energy and how steady the voice stays on longer words. A slight shake or a breathy tone tends to read older; a brisk pace and lively pitch tend to read younger.

Four voice scores alongside your age

Clarity, energy, resonance and steadiness each get a score from 0 to 100. They are useful beyond the age guess: a voice that scores well on energy and steadiness sounds confident on calls and in videos, whatever age it reads.

Kind, private and just for fun

The AI is told to explain its guess gently and to remind you that voice age often differs from real age. It doesn't comment on gender, ethnicity, health or looks, and your clip is deleted from our servers once the result is ready.

Quick reference

How voices change with age

Broad patterns that listeners, and the AI, pick up on. Individual voices vary a lot, so read these as tendencies, not rules.

Life stageCommon voice traitsWhy it happens
ChildrenHigh pitch, around 250–400 HzShort, light vocal folds
TeensPitch drops; the voice may crackPuberty lengthens the vocal folds
20s and 30sSettled pitch, strong and steadyThe voice is fully mature
40s and 50sSlightly lower, a little rougherHormonal shifts, including menopause
60s and upBreathier, shakier, often slowerVocal folds thin, muscles weaken

Typical adult speaking pitch is about 85–155 Hz for men and 165–255 Hz for women. In later life women's voices often get a little lower, while men's can rise slightly. Lifestyle matters too: smoking, frequent shouting and poor sleep can make a voice sound older, while regular speaking or singing practice helps keep it steady.

Why your voice age isn't your real age

When you ask "how old do I sound?", you're asking about a perception, not a measurement. Listeners build it from a handful of cues, mostly pitch, pace, energy and voice quality, and those cues depend on more than your birthday. A 45-year-old who speaks quickly and brightly can easily read as 30; a 22-year-old with a naturally low, slow voice can read as 35. Neither result is wrong. It's simply how that voice comes across.

Context changes it, too. Your voice is usually a little lower and rougher first thing in the morning, tired at the end of a long day, and hoarse after a cold or a loud night out. Phone and laptop microphones trim the very low and very high frequencies, which can blur the cues. That is why two clips from the same person can land a few years apart.

There's no "good" voice age. A younger-sounding voice can feel friendly and energetic; an older-sounding one can carry authority and calm. If your result surprised you, the four voice scores are more useful than the number itself.

  • Tends to sound younger: a brighter tone, lively pitch movement, a quick pace and sentences that lift at the end.
  • Tends to sound older: a lower or rougher tone, a slow and measured pace, creaky vocal fry, breathiness or a slight tremor.
  • Often surprises people: a very deep voice in a young man, or a high, light voice in an older woman. Listeners and AI alike tend to misjudge both.

Want to sound younger or older? What actually helps

You can't change the anatomy of your voice, but you can change the habits listeners use to judge it. Small adjustments to breath, pace and energy shift how old you sound far more than most people expect, and they also make you easier to listen to.

For a calmer, more mature sound, slow down slightly, let statements end on a gentle falling note, and speak from a relaxed breath instead of pushing your voice lower. For a younger, livelier sound, add energy and pitch movement, smile a little as you speak and keep sentences moving. Either way, drinking enough water, warming up and avoiding long stretches of shouting keep your voice steady.

If you want numbers to track, the free voice pitch test shows your average speaking pitch and how much it moves, and the male or female voice test shows where your pitch sits between typical ranges. Both run in your browser without an account, like the rest of our free voice tests.

Still have a question?

The quickest way to find out is to try it yourself. It only takes a minute.

Record 10 to 30 seconds of yourself reading and the AI gives you an estimate as an age range, such as 26 to 34, along with the vocal cues behind it. Pitch, pace, energy and voice quality do most of the work. Your voice age can be quite different from your real age, and that is completely normal.
